The Construction Industry these days has changed since the "Old Days". Today trained construction workers are at a premium. Jobsite Safety is a priority on most sites, and training is often required before you can even walk on the job. Safety training is a $5 billion industry and safety classes are expensive and hard to find. The Carpenters Educational Program provides up to the minute safety training free of charge to our members and contractors. Training through the program can even be customized to meet the needs of particular jobsites and contractors.
OSHA Outreach Classes are the foundation of all
Jobsite Safety programs in the Construction Industry.
Most contractors and owners require that workers
have a good working knowledge of the rules and how
to find the information in the standards. The
program offers the following classes taught by
OSHA authorized instructors:
OSHA 10 Hour Safety Training for the Construction Industry - U.B.C. Smartmark Program
Up to 10 safety topics covered in 10 hours
is the basis for this highly informative course.
Safety topics are based on OSHA regulations
with optional subjects included to meet the
needs of the participants. Video presentation
and classroom activities comprise the training.
This class meets the training requirements
Federal OSHA 29CFR part 1926. An OSHA 10 Hour
Card and a Smart Mark Card from the UBC will
be issued to participants successfully completing
this course.This card is a requirement of the
Safety Incentive Program.
OSHA 30 Hour Safety Training
OSHA 30 hour safety training is for those
participants needing to expand their safety
training beyond the basic hours of training
allows the participants to cover more
safety training based on OSHA regulations.
This class meets the training requirements
of Federal OSHA.
An OSHA 30 hour ID card will be issued to
participants successfully completing
this course.
OSHA 10 and 30 Hour Safety training for General Industry
OSHA Safety Training for General industry
is intended for people who work in factories
as some of our members do. These courses will
substantially enhance your knowledge of safety
but will not replace the requirement of the
courses for Construction above.
16 Hour Millwright Safety Training
This course was specifically designed for working
millwrights and covers all of the topics
covered in the 10 hour outreach program plus
segments on MSDS, Lead, Confined Space
Awareness and Asbestos Safety.
Safety Incentive Program
The Safety Incentive Program in New Mexico
requires participants to carry the following:
- 10 hour OSHA Safety Training not more than 3 years old
- 4 Hour UBC MSDS card or refresher not more than 1 year old
- 1 year without a lost time accident on the job

First Aid / CPR / AED
This course provides basic First Aid/CPR
training in the performance of emergencies
for conscious and unconscious victims, recognizing
signs of a heart attack and the proper techniques
for administering CPR. First Aid training deals with
controlling bleeding, burns, sprains, strains, poisoning,
broken bones, and caring for victims of sudden illness.
This class meets or exceeds Federal OSHA training
requirements.CPR cards have an expiration date of
one year. First Aid cards have an expiration date
of 3 years. 8 HOUR COURSE
Understanding Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
Under the Hazard Communication Standard (HAZCOM)
Federal OSHA require employers to reveal potential
chemical hazards workers may be exposed to. This
course covers the following topics as required
by regulations:
- Health Effects of Chemicals
- Recognizing Chemical Hazards
- Reading Labels
- Reading Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
- Rights and Responsibilities Under Current Regulations
Powder Actuated Tools
Powder Actuated Tools training provides
the participant with all the current OSHA
regulations dealing with such tools. Safe
operation of the tools is the primary
emphasis in this training program.
Disassembly, cleaning, maintenance, care
and storage are also covered in detail
during the training program. Students,
during the hands-on training, must
demonstrate the safe operation of the
Powder Actuated Tool in a simulated
jobsite condition.
An ID card from the manufacturer of the
tool will be issued to those Participants
successfully completing the course.
Fire Extinguisher Training
This one hour course is designed to train
our members in the use and type of fire
extinguishers used on construction sites. The
course covers the OSHA regulations involving the
placement and fire prevention procedures that
are common practice.
Air Tool Safety
This course covers the basic use of air
as a power source for nailers chippers,
jack hammers, sprayers and various other
air tools. Included in the class are
discussions of equipment and safety
procedures common in the construction industry.
Laser Tool Safety
Laser Safety covers the OSHA standards
relating to this time saving tool. The
course includes practical applications
of both visible and inffered tools used
in the industry today.

without taking the classes over and over.
This portability is another benefit of being
a Union Carpenter. The UBC issues ID cards
for each course.
Fall Protection for Carpenters
Fall Protection for Carpenters is a
4-hour course to provide general awareness
training to inform the participants on the
importance and need for fall protection on
today’s jobsites. This class also includes
the introduction of current OSHA and Federal
OSHA regulations dealing with Fall Protection
and the demonstration of state of the art
equipment (PPE).
Ergonomics for Carpenters
Ergonomics Awareness is designed to
answer many of the questions Carpenters
are confronting on a daily basis. What is
Ergonomics? It asks: "What is muscle fatigue?
How does the body work? What are cumulative
trauma disorders? The back: How does it work
and why does it Hurt? How do you
control and prevent cumulative trauma
disorders?" Lecture and classroom participation
provide the means of presenting the materials,
making the Ergonomics course a great
learning experience.
Aerial Lift
This course addresses OSHA requirements for
workers performing work from boom supported
working platforms or self-propelled platform
lifts. ANSI (American National Standards Institute)
regulations are also covered in detail.
ANSI 92.5 (1992) refers to "Boom Supported
Plat-forms" and ANSI 92.6 (1999) refers
to "Self Propelled Platforms".
The course consists of classroom presentations
and instruction combined with hands-on training.
The classroom instruction is followed by the
student’s pre-operation safety checks which
mirror specific manufacturers’ requirements.
The course is then combined with hands-on
training using boom supported platforms and
self propelled platforms (ie. Scissors Lift).
Students maneuver through an obstacle course
and practice operating at extended heights.
Confined Space Entry
Students in this course are instructed in
safe access and monitoring methods for
Confined Space Entry which include preparing
permits and identifying the role of the
attendant and the worker making the entry
utilizing a chamber mock-up with several
working and emergency rescue procedures.
Both CAL-OSHA and Federal OSHA regulations
are covered in detail. The importance of a
respirator fit test and respiratory protection
training are covered in this course.
UBC Rigging Class
The UBC rigging course is a comprehensive
thirty-two (32) hours of rigging training.
Classroom instruction and hands-on training
provides the participants with the latest
information on rigging hardware and procedures.
Safety is emphasized in every work process.
Load calculations, sling choice and hand
signals are some of the many topics covered
during the 32 hours of this program. Students
must successfully demonstrate the ability to
rig a mock-up lift, communicate using hand
signals, communicate using radio signals,
correct choice, proper use of hardware and
safe lifting and positioning the load with
the help of a crane.
Rough Terrain Forklift
This comprehensive course includes classroom
instruction, workbook activities and video
presentations in the safe operation of a
Powered Industrial Lift Truck (Forklift/Gradall).
Hands-on training requires that the student
demonstrate the ability to operate the lift
truck safely. Training meets or exceeds
California OSHA and Federal OSHA regulations.
A UBC ID card will be issued upon successful
completion of the class. ID cards have an
expiration date of 3 years.
